AURUM

Aurum Designs Ltd was a Mail Order marketing agency that specialised in producing limited editions of commemorative silver pieces as collector's items of contemporary design with historic interest. Set up by John Sutherland-Hawes he initially used some of the current designer- silversmiths but most were designed and made by Hector Miller; many have figurative work by sculptor Tim Minett. Hector was employed by Stuart Devlin who allowed him to use his workshop to produce many of the early pieces before establishing his own premises.
In the two sections -  those currently in stock and those sold - is a complete list of all 59 items produced by Aurum Designs between 1972 and 1989.
I have also included details from original certificates but not all items below for sale have these, or original boxes.
Check with individual items before purchase to see if they are boxed or have a certificate.

I have also listed original sizes and weights kindly given to me by John Sutherland-Hawes but as these were all hand made these will vary slightly from item to item.

The response was enthusiastic and upwards of 150 breeders subsequently lent their support. Today, the Society numbers some 1300 members and in April 1979, as it celebrates its Centenary, it will be the recipient of an unique honour, when Her Majesty The Queen accepts its Presidency.

Her foremast lies entangled across the starboard side. A ship’s boat, lowered from the starboard davits, has been crushed: a sailor is climbing back to the steamer’s poop. The reefed main sail has torn loose against the shrouds; the starboard paddle-case is awash; the crew shelter by the stern weather rail while heavy seas break over the wreck. Hillary is assisting coxswain Vondy at the stern steering oar; behind a crewman is paying out a stern anchor line; two others are fending off with oars from ridges of rocks to the right; in the bows a man is hailing the ‘St. George’

The handle of the Bowl, sculptured by Tim Minett, is a crowned, rampant lion, the royal and national symbol of England. Its left paw is supported by a shield bearing across and martlets: the arms of St Edward, which is incorporated in those of the Abbey. The lion proffers St Edward’s Crown, so named because, in origin, it was the Confessor’s own, preserved by the Abbey. It is the Coronation Crown which, at the height of the great national and religious solemnity, is taken from the Abbey’s High Altar by the Dean of Westminster and presented to the Archbishop to be placed on the head of the newly-anointed sovereign.

The Minster is the fifth cathedral in York and took nearly two and a half centuries to complete before it was re-consecrated in 1472. In 1967 the foundations were seen to be failing and the great central tower in danger of collapse. The frieze around the base of the goblet symbolises the restoration with twelve figures representing the hundreds of skilled workers involved: Engineers; Woodworkers; Plasterers; Surveyors; Decorators; Masons and Stone Carvers; Scaffolders; Steelworkers; Drillers and Concreters.

In a letter from the Dean promoting the York Minster Bowl he said: "…..the first piece produced, the Aurum York Minster Goblet, exceeded our hopes in every one of these respects. The almost instantaneous over-subscription of the entire edition on its first public announcement was gratifying but not surprising.”

(This was the first limited edition piece that Hector Miller produced for Aurum and was made in the workshops of Stuart Devlin where Hector was working at the time)
