The goblets stem is formed of a Madonna Lily, which for centuries has symbolised the Virgin Mary, the only lily of true pure whiteness. The three open blooms are overlaid with rhodium: one of the whitest metals known, akin to platinum but more precious. Surrounding the base of the stem are three Lancastrian roses; the geographical boundaries of the diocese and Lancashire are practically the same.

On 26th October 1976 the Provost presented the First of these to HM The Queen, received by the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire on her behalf.

The tapering profile of the goblets cup traces that of the Cathedralís spire. Only six of Englandís medieval cathedrals have stone spires. The cup is supported by a stem formed as a sheaf of wheat. From Roman times, the fertile Sussex plain has been renowned for grain and, in the eighteenth century, with Chichester as its prospering centre, it became the granary of Southern England, feeding London. Upon the wheatsheaf stem appears the six heraldic martlets of Sussex.

(Desmond Clen-Murphy lived in Sussex and produced several commissions for Chichester Cathedral)

The Isle of Ely was an island in a sea marsh until the seventeenth century. The long connection with the sea is reflected in the design of the goblet with the mermaid holding the three keys of Ely, the Cathedralís heraldic device. The octagonal stem with its wave-like texture is based on the great vault surmounted by a tower of oak

Hereford Cathedral nave is supported by large majestic columns and theses inspire the weight and shape of the stem of the goblet. The decoration of the stem is inspired by the vigorous twelfth century carving on their capitals which are the rarest of the Cathedralís works. The decoration at the top of the stem incorporates, at intervals, the five inverted chevrons of the Cathedralís ancient arms. The more dominant leopardís heads, canted and transfixed by fleur de lys, come from the arms of the Diocese and date from the thirteenth century. They are a legacy from Thomas de Cantilupe, Herefordís bishop and, later, its saint. Their fearless aspect was not inappropriate for a man who would defy his king in a just cause, or a See which could only live by courage.

Goblet Number 1 was presented to HM The Queen by the Bishop of Hereford on her visit to distribute Maundy Money on 15th April 1976

The Minster is the fifth cathedral in York and took nearly two and a half centuries to complete before it was re-consecrated in 1472. In 1967 the foundations were seen to be failing and the great central tower in danger of collapse. The frieze around the base of the goblet symbolises the restoration with twelve figures representing the hundreds of skilled workers involved: Engineers; Woodworkers; Plasterers; Surveyors; Decorators; Masons and Stone Carvers; Scaffolders; Steelworkers; Drillers and Concreters.

In a letter from the Dean promoting the York Minster Bowl he said: "Ö..the first piece produced, the Aurum York Minster Goblet, exceeded our hopes in every one of these respects. The almost instantaneous over-subscription of the entire edition on its first public announcement was gratifying but not surprising.Ē

(This was the first limited edition piece that Hector Miller produced for Aurum and was made in the workshops of Stuart Devlin where Hector was working at the time)

Desmond Clen-Murphy (1924-2010). He studied with Gerald Benney at Brighton School of Arts and Crafts where they were taught silversmithing by Dunstan Pruden. He established a workshop in Brighton in 1952 and taught at Worthing. In the 1950's gave Benney a hand and also worked with Louis Osman. The majority of his work was made as commissions from the Goldsmiths' Company, Universities, Churches and the Government. His work rarely turns up apart from the Chichester Cathedral goblet he designed for Aurum in 1976 - some of his work can be seen in the Treasury there.
