When Lanfranc came to Canterbury the Cathedral and Monastery were in ruins. He was nearly 70 when he became Archbishop and he had 19 very fruitful years. When he died in 1089 he had completely rebuilt the Cathedral and Monastery and won back purloined land and incomes. He appears in miniature on the goblet in alternating frames based on two stained glass windows from the Cathedralís Trinity Chapel. He is in the company of St Augustine, the founder; St Thomas Becket, martyred in the Cathedral; the Black Prince who is buried there and William the Conqueror who Lanfranc served loyally. The sixth figure has no nameĖ a  medieval pilgrim, representative of the myriad pilgrims who made their way to Canterbury and the shrine of St Thomas.

Goblet number 1 was presented to HRH The Queen by the Chapter of Canterbury

At Exeter, AD 1280 marked the death of Walter Bronescombe and the accession of Peter Quinil. Bronescombe planned and began the new Exeter Cathedral but much work remained Ė it is to these two bishops that Exeter owes its Cathedral as it is today.

The curvature of the ribbed foot of the goblet is inspired by the moulded arches overhead in the longest Gothic vault in Christendom. These lofty arches rise from vaulting shafts, all carried by corbels which are enriched with naturalistic carvings. These have inspired the gobletís stem.

Exeterís well-loved Tumbler is balanced on the Cathedrals Coat of Arms. Next to him stands St Peter, to whom the cathedral is dedicated. On the other two sides are miniature sculptures of Moses and the Virgin and Child

The Congress of European Movement Standing Cup and Cover reproduces the first gold European Movement Prize, which was presented to Monsieur Jean Monnet at the Congress held in London in 1973, the year of the United Kingdomís entry into the European Economic Community. The prize is to be given each year to an individual for outstanding service to Europe.

This edition was not sold out so those produced for the winners in 1974,1975 and 1976 were only offered to those who had purchased this first one. (Originally commissioned by the British Council of the European Movement for 6 years but not produced in 1977/8)

The first goblet was presented to the Queen by the Garter King of Arms.

The 3 Lion's rampant holding shields support the bowl of the goblet. In true heraldic fashion, each is sculptured to look 'more like a lion than did ever any lion of nature' but each is distinguished from the other two. Her Majesty the Queen's, which holds the Royal Arms, is crowned. Richard III's is unadorned in the early royal fashion and holds the Royal Arms of his time, those of France and England combined. The shield of the College of Arms is held by one of its lion supporters, engorged with a coronet.

Central silver gilt boss, carved by Ian Ribbons depicts: Hillaryís boat, launched from the bay behind the old lighthouse on the pier, is approaching between St.Maryís Rock and the wreck which, bows down, is heeling over to starboard. Her foremast lies entangled across the starboard side. A shipís boat, lowered from the starboard davits, has been crushed: a sailor is climbing back to the steamerís poop. The reefed main sail has torn loose against the shrouds; the starboard paddle-case is awash; the crew shelter by the stern weather rail while heavy seas break over the wreck. Hillary is assisting coxswain Vondy at the stern steering oar; behind a crewman is paying out a stern anchor line; two others are fending off with oars from ridges of rocks to the right; in the bows a man is hailing the ĎSt. Georgeí

The small orchestra numbers only seven and it is they who form the stem of the goblet made for the Seventh centenary. As in the Choir itself, Lincoln's assertive imp is not overlooked: the Goblet's angelic trumpeter contends with his distracting presence at his feet.

The Dean presented the first of these goblets to the Queen when she visited the Cathedral for the Seventh Centenary service

John Sutherland-Hawes told me: 'The paperweight: although it bears the Aurum hallmark, it was not an Aurum product and should not be included in your list. I had made for my son to give to the headmaster of his primary school when he left. (It's possible there was a second one for my son's housemaster at his next school - but I don't remember.) The inscription came from "The Universal Penman" by George Bickham. In full it reads "He most improves who studies with delight / and learns sound morals as he learns to write". Yes, Madeleine Dinkel was the calligrapher, but I've no recollection who made it'

(I have included it in this listing as it bears the Am mark for completeness and another example may turn up)

The four candleholders surmount a crowned, rampant lion, the royal and national symbol of England, whose origin lies in Richard the Lionheartís choice of golden lions for his alms. The lion proffers St. Edwardís Crown, so named because, in origin, it was the Confessorís own, preserved by the Abbey and is now the Coronation Crown, The lionís left paw is supported by a shield bearing a cross and five martlets: the arms of St. Edward, which are incorporated in those of the Abbey. The shape of the foot, with its twenty five gilt flutes, is reminiscent of the fab vaulting of the Henry VII chapel, the Abbeyís most wonderful architectural feature.

The cover is formed of blooms of the English Sweet Briar Rose, together with their attendance hips and foliage.

Letter from John Sutherland-Hawes: ĎIt is our only limited edition in 1987. The reason for this and for the very small number in the edition is the heavy existing commitments which our workshop has. We are usually successful in keeping a balance between our work on limited editions and our work on private commissions but this year we tried in vain because of two large export orders which we accepted for large tableware services. They are still keeping us very busy but opportunities to design for events which are personal to HM The Queen are rare and not to be refused.í

This was only offered to regular customers on a first come basis

Before starting the rebuilding of St Paulís following the Great Fire, Christopher Wren stood on the empty site and called for a stone to mark the centre of the new building. A workman pulled a fragment of an old gravestone from the rubble and handed it to him: it was inscribed ĎResurgemí - ĎI shall rise againí. It had already been rebuilt three times and now for the fourth, like a phoenix from the ashes. Over the great south door of the completed cathedral stands the carved phoenix which he placed there, above the solitary word ĎResurgemí.

The bowl of the goblet is held by heraldic beasts, each holding its appropriate coat of arms, are those associated with the three principals in the event.

For the Prince, the Dragon, his insignia as Prince of Wales: the Celtic badge of chieftanship, first used in English royal heraldry by the Tudors.

For the Lady Diana, the Griffin, crest of the Spencers: in legend a guardian of treasure with the appearance of the eagle and lion combined.

For St Paulís, the Phoenix, its emblem chosen by Wren. The cathedral he built replaced old St Paulís, destroyed in the Great Fire of London, as fire had destroyed its two predecessors. Each time, like a phoenix from its ashes, it rose again.

The first goblet in this edition was given by the Cathedral as a wedding gift to The Prince & Princess of Wales after the marriage ceremony there

The bowl of the cup surmounts a crowned, rampant lion, the royal and national symbol of England, whose origin lies in Richard the Lionheartís choice of golden lions for his alms. The lion proffers St. Edwardís Crown, so named because, in origin, it was the Confessorís own, preserved by the Abbey and is ow the Coronation Crown, The lionís left paw is supported by a shield bearing a cross and five martlets: the arms of St. Edward, which are incorporated in those of the Abbey. The shape of the cupís foot, with its twenty five gilt flutes, is reminiscent of the fab vaulting of the Henry VII chapel, the Abbeyís most wonderful architectural feature.

The Dean, Edward Carpenter, presented Goblet number 1 to Her Majesty the Queen on her visit to the Abbey on Maundy Thursday, her first public engagement following her return from overseas.
