GWENDOLINE WHICKER Silver Dish
London 1959

Diameter: 7.8 cm

Gwendoline Cross was born in Bristol in 1900 and attended Bristol Art School. She married Australian artist Fred Whicker in 1931 and lived in Clifton, Bristol and both of them exhibited at the Royal West of England Academy annual exhibitions. They moved to Wood Lane, Falmouth and she registered her hallmark in London in 1948. She made cutlery, jewellery boxes with hand beaten silver decorated with either enamel or semi-precious stones and jewellery. They moved from the New Bristol Arts Club to the St. Ives Society of Artists, with Gwen as secretary and Fred treasurer and exhibited there until their deaths. She produced etchings, paintings, drawings, sculpture, jewellery and silverwork. Much of her silver work has not been traced as it was sent to Fred's sister in Canada on her death. A retrospective exhibition of their work was held at the Falmouth Art Gallery in 1994 when 14 pieces of silverwork were loaned from private collections.

Diameter: 11.3 cm
Width: 15.5 cm

Peter says that the design for this commission was based on a Misericord in Lincoln Cathedral. (A Misericord, sometimes named mercy seat, like the Biblical object, is a small wooden structure formed on the underside of a folding seat in a church which, when the seat is folded up, is intended to act as a shelf to support a person in a partially standing position during long periods of prayer).

Peter undertook a pre-apprenticeship course at the Central School of Arts and Crafts 1962-3 then apprenticed to Norman Bassant at C J Vander 1963-7. He then studied at Hornsey College of Art 1967-70 before working with Louis Osman. He then set up his own workshop in Old Street, London in 1972 where he continued to do outwork for Louis Osman and Malcolm Appleby, the latter favouring him as his silversmith of choice. Hector Miller used his workshop while studying at the RCA and they entered a joint mark for a church commission at Wool, in Dorset. Peter has also been a technician-lecturer at the RCA.
