The Duchess of Sutherland's Cripples Guild was formed by Millicent Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, the 4th Duchess of Sutherland, in 1900. The Guild was a method of raising funds for the disabled children from the Staffordshire Potteries as well teaching them a craft in order to make a living for themselves and their families. Known as 'Meddlesome Millie' for her campaigning for better conditions in the Potteries, she succeeded in removing the harmful lead from paint glazes and thus improving the lives of all who worked at the Potteries. By 1902 there were over one hundred children being taught within the guild and it became recognised as an influential part of the British Arts & Crafts movement.
