DAVID MELLOR Silver JUG
Sheffield 1955

Fully Hallmarked Silver
Sterling (925)

Walker and Hall

Width: 10 cm
Height: 5 cm

Engraved to base: G.H.N 51

DAVID MELLOR had graduated from the RCA in 1954 and was appointed a design consultant for WALKER & HALL. Professor ROBERT GOODEN, Head of Silver & Jewellery at the Royal College of Art who had taught MELLOR, considered this appointment as the highlight of the mid 1950's. Although no designs have been found for this, his wife Fiona McCarthy and son Corin Mellor have confirmed that the basic design for these follows his thoughts on this early period and that the double skinned handles also points to these being designed by him

The Society owes its origins to a suggestion by Lord Chesham, at the Wray Park Sale of May 10th 1878, that the time had arrived to establish a Herd Book for English Jersey Cattle. The response was enthusiastic and upwards of 150 breeders subsequently lent their support. Today, the Society numbers some 1300 members and in April 1979, as it celebrates its Centenary, it will be the recipient of an unique honour, when Her Majesty The Queen accepts its Presidency.

DON PORRITT Silver 'FLOWING WATER' JUG
Sheffield 2008

The body of the jug is constructed of two main sections. The front, with its strong curvilinear profiled edge and flowing, wire emphasis - is backed by a repoussé formed rear element. The dynamic wire feature is an essential constructional detail - the repoussé rear section is profiled to fit the front at this juncture - and also fits underneath the wire to guarantee a sound seam between the two body elements. (The flowing shaped wire is not just an applied decorative feature). The handle is hollow and a four piece construction
