In a promotional letter dated 24th May 1978 the Lord Mayor, Air Commodore The Honourable Sir Peter Vanneck wrote: ‘One hundred years ago, the city of London won a long, hard and very important battle. It was fought specifically to save Epping Forest but its implications were much wider. The Epping Forest Act of 1878 proved a turning point in the sad story of the depredation of England’s common lands and was a major early victory for the forces of conservation’
