Rod Kelly had previously made a beaker and plate for Toshio Konishi, fellow Director of Sir Paul Girolami, Chairman of Glaxo and past Warden of the Goldsmiths' Company. When his son Hiroshi Konishi took over as a Director he commissioned this goblet.
The decoration has lotus blossom motifs and a Japanese flag with a sun. The horses were a Japanese symbol associated with his family.
