The Isle of Ely was an island in a sea marsh until the seventeenth century. The long connection with the sea is reflected in the design of the goblet with the mermaid holding the three keys of Ely, the Cathedral’s heraldic device. The octagonal stem with its wave-like texture is based on the great vault surmounted by a tower of oak.
John Willmin was born in 1943 and took his National Diploma in Design at Leicester College of Art where he enjoyed sculpture. In 1963 he moved to the Central School of Art in London, intending to do jewellery, but because of his previous work with metal they put him in the silversmithing class, with jewellery as an add on. He won a Travelling Scholarship where he visited Copenhagen and Stockholm before setting up a workshop in London. He spent half the week lecturing in Silversmithing at the Hornsey School of Art. Although his output was mainly smaller pieces of jewellery he soon received commissions for larger pieces of silver including the Ely Cathedral Goblet for Aurum Designs. He spent much of the 1980-90's in Oman doing design work for the Sultan before returning to a workshop in Leicester.
Because he often worked to commission, items rarely come on the market, apart from the Limited Edition goblet for Ely Cathedral.
