Keith Redfern was born in Sheffield in 1935 and studied at the College of Art there before going to the Royal College of Art. He worked for David Mellor and Elkington before becoming a partner in Silver Workshop in the early 1960's with two RCA contemporaries Ronald Stevens and Tony Laws. When they stopped trading in 1972 he became Head of 3D Design at Hornsey College of Art and established Keith Redfern Designs

A similar jug is in the Goldsmiths' Company collection. In their catalogue - 'Treasures of the 20th Century' it says: 'On his early retirement from teaching in higher education, Keith Redfern was encouraged by the Company to concentrate on designing silver. Having undertaken a commission of a water jug for the Haberdashers' Company and then a flagon in 1991 for Lichfield Cathedral, the success of his elegant designs led this Company commission, which in turn led to the commission for the Silver Trust in Downing Street in 1993, and further commissions'.

(In fact there are 3 similar jugs at 10 Downing Street made in 1992,1994 and 1995).

Other similar examples can be found in the Pearson Silver Collection; the Keatley Trust and the Middle Temple. Ove a 12 year period more than a dozen jugs were made.
