When Lanfranc came to Canterbury the Cathedral and Monastery were in ruins. He was nearly 70 when he became Archbishop and he had 19 very fruitful years. When he died in 1089 he had completely rebuilt the Cathedral and Monastery and won back purloined land and incomes. He appears in miniature on the goblet in alternating frames based on two stained glass windows from the Cathedral’s Trinity Chapel. He is in the company of St Augustine, the founder; St Thomas Becket, martyred in the Cathedral; the Black Prince who is buried there and William the Conqueror who Lanfranc served loyally. The sixth figure has no name– a medieval pilgrim, representative of the myriad pilgrims who made their way to Canterbury and the shrine of St Thomas.

The tapering profile of the goblets cup traces that of the Cathedral’s spire. Only six of England’s medieval cathedrals have stone spires. The cup is supported by a stem formed as a sheaf of wheat. From Roman times, the fertile Sussex plain has been renowned for grain and, in the eighteenth century, with Chichester as its prospering centre, it became the granary of Southern England, feeding London. Upon the wheatsheaf stem appears the six heraldic martlets of Sussex. (Desmond Clen-Murphy lived in Sussex and produced several commissions for Chichester Cathedral)

The first goblet was presented to the Queen by the Garter King of Arms.
The 3 Lion's rampant holding shields support the bowl of the goblet. In true heraldic fashion, each is sculptured to look 'more like a lion than did ever any lion of nature' but each is distinguished from the other two. Her Majesty the Queen's, which holds the Royal Arms, is crowned. Richard III's is unadorned in the early royal fashion and holds the Royal Arms of his time, those of France and England combined. The shield of the College of Arms is held by one of its lion supporters, engorged with a coronet.

At Exeter, AD 1280 marked the death of Walter Bronescombe and the accession of Peter Quinil. Bronescombe planned and began the new Exeter Cathedral but much work remained – it is to these two bishops that Exeter owes its Cathedral as it is today.
The curvature of the ribbed foot of the goblet is inspired by the moulded arches overhead in the longest Gothic vault in Christendom. These lofty arches rise from vaulting shafts, all carried by corbels which are enriched with naturalistic carvings. These have inspired the goblet’s stem.
Exeter’s well-loved Tumbler is balanced on the Cathedrals Coat of Arms. Next to him stands St Peter, to whom the cathedral is dedicated. On the other two sides are miniature sculptures of Moses and the Virgin and Child

The Congress of European Movement Standing Cup and Cover reproduces the first gold European Movement Prize, which was presented to Monsieur Jean Monnet at the Congress held in London in 1973, the year of the United Kingdom’s entry into the European Economic Community. The prize is to be given each year to an individual for outstanding service to Europe.

* When I contacted John Sutherland-Hawes about the complete sets Aurum Designs produced, this one was not listed.
With this goblet is a letter dated October 1978 from him stating: ' ....... was especially produced to your order ....'
This last cup was not advertised and only produced for previous purchasers of the first three if they enquired, therefore would have been made in a very small run. There is also correspondence doubting any production at all of the last two in this series - 1977 & 1978.
This is the only example of the one for Spinelli that I have ever seen, and have never seen any for the last 2 years in this series, so believe they were never produced. If anyone has seen other ones, please contact me.

Stuart Crystal cup on a base set with three cultured pearls forming the centres of Welsh Poppy blooms rising from a circle of scallop shells. The Welsh Poppy blooms in June,when Prince William was born, and his birth gem is the pearl. Scallop Shells are the most conspicuous feature of the Spencer family’s coat of arms, now incorporated in the royal arms of The Prince of Wales.

The decoration of the stem is inspired by the vigorous twelfth century carving on their capitals which are the rarest of the Cathedral’s works. The decoration at the top of the stem incorporates, at intervals, the five inverted chevrons of the Cathedral’s ancient arms. The more dominant leopard’s heads, canted and transfixed by fleur de lys, come from the arms of the Diocese and date from the thirteenth century. They are a legacy from Thomas de Cantilupe, Hereford’s bishop and, later, its saint. Their fearless aspect was not inappropriate for a man who would defy his king in a just cause, or a See which could only live by courage.

I have a Promotional Letter from Aurum Designs Limited dated 21 July 1982:
When asked about examples of our work in solid gold we have always dissuaded customers whose main interest was the metal itself as an investment. Uninteresting as they may be, lumps of bullion and Krugerrands serve that purpose better.
There have, however, been two recent developments to note. The first, the extension of VAT to gold in all its forms, means that gold artefacts no longer suffer a price disadvantage in this respect; the second is the low price of gold which has been prevailing. No one can predict the future, but this company has built up its working stock of gold at recent and, in our opinion, very attractive prices.
Because of this, we are able to make available twenty-five Royal Scallop Dishes in solid gold at a price which will be held firm for a week. They will form part of the edition of 250.
In solid, hallmarked 18 carat gold, the dish has a minimum weight of 5 oz. Troy or 156 grammes and will be supplied at a price, which includes VAT, of £1780 each.
Orders at this price will be accepted only if they are received at 7 King Street, by post or telephone, on or before 28 July 1982. The enclosed order form may be used, but please mark it 'Solid Gold'.

The four candleholders surmount a crowned, rampant lion, the royal and national symbol of England, whose origin lies in Richard the Lionheart’s choice of golden lions for his alms. The lion proffers St. Edward’s Crown, so named because, in origin, it was the Confessor’s own, preserved by the Abbey and is now the Coronation Crown, The lion’s left paw is supported by a shield bearing a cross and five martlets: the arms of St. Edward, which are incorporated in those of the Abbey. The shape of the foot, with its twenty five gilt flutes, is reminiscent of the fab vaulting of the Henry VII chapel, the Abbey’s most wonderful architectural feature.

Five sculpted figures adorn the goblet: St Wilfred, the founder; St Peter, the patron saint; Charles Longley, the first Bishop of the new diocese and later Archbishop of York and Canterbury; King James I, the benefactor who restored the revenues taken by Henry VIII and Walter de Grey, the great builder. All figures were sculpted by Tim Minett from stone sculptures in the Cathedral except for Archbishop de Grey, taken from a 13th Century portrayal at York Minster.

Made to commemorate the City’s 11th Centenary. By tradition the city received its first charter from King Alfred in 886 in the form of a horn.. Every night of the year, without fail, a horn is blown four times in the city’s market place and then outside the house of the Mayor to set the ‘watch’. The cover is fashioned from blooms and foliage of the wild briar, here portrayed in a naturalistic style but, in its heraldic form, reminiscent of the Yorkshire Rose. There are eleven roses, one for each of Ripon’s centuries.
The first centrepiece was presented to the Queen Mother on her visit to Ripon on 1st June 1986

Central silver gilt boss, carved by Ian Ribbons depicts: Hillary’s boat, launched from the bay behind the old lighthouse on the pier, is approaching between St.Mary’s Rock and the wreck which, bows down, is heeling over to starboard. Her foremast lies entangled across the starboard side. A ship’s boat, lowered from the starboard davits, has been crushed: a sailor is climbing back to the steamer’s poop. The reefed main sail has torn loose against the shrouds; the starboard paddle-case is awash; the crew shelter by the stern weather rail while heavy seas break over the wreck. Hillary is assisting coxswain Vondy at the stern steering oar; behind a crewman is paying out a stern anchor line; two others are fending off with oars from ridges of rocks to the right; in the bows a man is hailing the ‘St. George’

Since 1108 Southwell Mister has been the mother church of Nottinghamshire and a cathedral since 1884. The bowl of the goblet is decorated with the Leaves of Southwell; this sober Norman building contains the most luxuriant and finest Gothic foliage carving in England. Leaves of various plants and trees can be found there, and the main ones are the Oak, Hawthorn and Ivy found here. Amongst the foliage can be seen the face of the Green Man, who became part of the symbolic language of the Church in the Middle Ages, although his origin goes back to pagan times. The three golden lines around the foot of the goblet make a dual heraldic allusion. Undulating lines, ‘wavy fesses’, are indicative of water in heraldry. They are a principal feature of in both the shield of Nottinghamshire, referring to the River Trent, and in the shield of the Diocese, recalling the three ancient wells which gave Southwell its name.
On the 19th April 1984 HRH The Queen made her first visit to the Minster and was presented with goblet number 1 by the Lord Bishop of Southwell.

The stem of the candelabrum is held by heraldic beasts, each holding its appropriate coat of arms, are those associated with the three principals in the event.
For the Prince, the Dragon, his insignia as Prince of Wales: the Celtic badge of chieftanship, first used in English royal heraldry by the Tudors.
For the Lady Diana, the Griffin, crest of the Spencers: in legend a guardian of treasure with the appearance of the eagle and lion combined.
For St Paul’s, the Phoenix, its emblem chosen by Wren. The cathedral he builtr eplaced old St Paul’s, destroyed in the Great Fire of London, as fire had destroyed its two predecessors. Each time, like a phoenix from its ashes, it rose again.

The vigorous carving on the capitals of the twelfth century pillars which flank the cathedrals nave have inspired the coaster’s silver gallery. Its whorls of Norman tracery have been interwoven with the leopard’s heads of Cantilupe. Three leopards’ heads, reversed and transfixed with fleur de lys, formed the coat of arms of St Thomas Cantilupe, and became the Arms of the Diocese, adorn the centre of the coaster.

The lion proffers St. Edward’s Crown, so named because, in origin, it was the Confessor’s own, preserved by the Abbey and is ow the Coronation Crown, The lion’s left paw is supported by a shield bearing a cross and five martlets: the arms of St. Edward, which are incorporated in those of the Abbey. The shape of the cup’s foot, with its twenty five gilt flutes, is reminiscent of the fab vaulting of the Henry VII chapel, the Abbey’s most wonderful architectural feature.
The Dean, Edward Carpenter, presented Goblet number 1 to Her Majesty the Queen on her visit to the Abbey on Maundy Thursday, her first public engagement following her return from overseas

The goblet’s trumpet shaped bowl rises from a pierced surround resembling a crown,heightened with crosses patee and fleur-de-lis as is the Prince’s own. It contains the coats of arms of the three principals: the Prince, his bride and Westminster Abbey itself.
Goblet Number 1 was a wedding gift to the Royal couple from the Abbey

The Minster is the fifth cathedral in York and took nearly two and a half centuries to complete before it was re-consecrated in 1472. In 1967 the foundations were seen to be failing and the great central tower in danger of collapse. The frieze around the base of the goblet symbolises the restoration with twelve figures representing the hundreds of skilled workers involved: Engineers; Woodworkers; Plasterers; Surveyors; Decorators; Masons and Stone Carvers; Scaffolders; Steelworkers; Drillers and Concreters.
In a letter from the Dean promoting the York Minster Bowl he said: "…..the first piece produced, the Aurum York Minster Goblet, exceeded our hopes in every one of these respects. The almost instantaneous over-subscription of the entire edition on its first public announcement was gratifying but not surprising.” (This was the first limited edition piece that Hector Miller produced for Aurum and was made in the workshops of Stuart Devlin where Hector was working at the time)
