Richard Fox Silver 'Abovo' Knife & Fork
London 1989
Fully Hallmarked Silver
Sterling (925)
Length knife: 21.5 cm - Stainless steel blade
Richard designed this service 'Abovo' as a 7 piece place setting while at the Royal College of Art. Despite orders from leading stores for a stainless steel version, he could not find finance for the tooling, only the production costs. He did make a few sets in silver, one for an experimental auction of contemporary silver in the late 1980's. He was pleased when this achieved £5000 as they normally retailed for about £3000 at the time.
RICHARD FOX disliked metalwork at school, but at Hornsey College of Art studying jewellery under Keith Redfern in 1974 was shown 3D design and started silversmithing. He studied under Gerald Benney at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1981. In 1983 he received his first commission from the Goldsmiths' Company, a pair of 4 branch candelabra - more were to follow. In 1984 he designed and made his first motor racing trophy and he has continued to do work for Bernie Ecclestone since, producing the current Formula One Drivers' World Championship trophy in 1995. He has also produced work for Garrard, Bulgari, 10 Downing Street and even a chalice given to the Pope by the Archbishop of Canterbury. He was Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths' Company in 2020.
