Dennis Smith & Gareth Harris met in 1975 at the Sir John Cass School of Art before working together at Edward Barnard in 1980. In 1981 they set up a workshop in Hatton Garden together producing work for top retailers and then developed their own creations,

A tumbler cup was placed on a touch sensitive pad linked to a computer and the random rocking of the cup produced a series of arcs which were then translated into 3D form. Patrick Sierolawski, then a student at the RCA, grew the 3D form in resin using stereo lithography with ultra-violet lasers, this was then cast in silver. The freezing of random motion forms the base that the tumbler sits in perfectly.

The Chairman's Cup, a cup and cover, was produced at the same time by Smith & Harris for the Society.
